In the South Bay, residents are loyal to two brands above all else – Skechers, and Body Glove. Both companies are based in the South Bay, and Body Glove has an especially rich history in the area. Bill and Bob Meistrell – a pair of midwestern twins – moved to California in the early 50’s and actually invented the wet suit right here in Redondo Beach. Unfortunately Bob Meistrell passed away earlier this year at 84 while fixing his boat’s engine while at a paddleboarding race – but the South Bay’s love for the company still runs deep. I spent the weekend on The Disappearance (his yacht) during my first weekend in the South Bay and even learned to scuba dive in his backyard pool while the new Body Glove pool was being built. He will be missed – but his legacy can be seen on the bodies of surfers on almost every beach in the world.
